Pilar M. Herr is an Assistant Professor in History at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg where she teaches Latin American History. She received her Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington in Latin American History in 2001, and has a background in International Relations (BA, University of California at Santa Barbara, 1991) and Latin American Studies (MA, Indiana University, Bloomington, 1994). She is a first-generation American, of Chilean parents and is bilingual in Spanish. Her research interests are in nineteenth-century state formation and ethnohistory in the Southern Cone. Dr. Herr has recently published a book, Contested Nation: the Mapuche, Bandits, and State Formation in Nineteenth-Century Chile (University of New Mexico Press, 2019) and is currently working on an article for publication.

An avid traveler, Dr. Herr has traveled to Latin America, Mexico, and Europe. She is an enthusiastic supporter of efforts for students to study abroad and is proud to be the Vira I. Heinz Program Coordinator for the Pitt-Greensburg campus. Students applying for VIH need to see Dr. Herr (FOB 220) to discuss study abroad options before submitting their online applications by the November 1st deadline.
