Mental Health Abroad

Traveling abroad can be a stressful experience for anyone.  With culture shock and unexpected changes in plans, it is sometimes difficult to know what to expect.  For individuals with mental health conditions, this stress can be exacerbated. It is important for individuals with any mental health or chronic conditions to work with their university, campus coordinator, health care providers, and study abroad program to best prepare and manage their health before and during their international experience.

Tips for preparing to study abroad

  • Make a plan for managing your mental health abroad
  • Consider notifying your Program Provider prior to departure
  • Be sure to have and discuss a plan with your health care providers to continue treatment while abroad
  • Maintain realistic expectations for your time abroad
  • If you take medication, make sure to bring enough for the entire time you will be abroad
  • Make sure the medication you take is legal in your destination country
  • Be sure to bring a copy of your actual prescription with you
